Some of you may know that I once started TIQUE, Norway’s first international magazine. Through it I was lucky enough to work alongside some of the great legends of photography — Bill King, Terence Donovan, Guy Bourdin — and that is where I learned to become a fashion photographer worth the name.
But it wasn’t until I began to study Ansel Adams that my pictures truly changed; I owe his books more than I can easily say. And yet — even a technically perfect photograph is worth nothing if it doesn’t stir something in the person looking at it.
This picture was made at almost exactly the spot where Adams took one of his most famous images, ‘Clearing Winter Storm’. It was a place he returned to again and again — thirty versions of the same view, perhaps more. There the light and the weather shift every few minutes; you need patience, and no small amount of luck, to come away with something even close to what he found.
